Halloween 2021

今年、アメリカのかぼちゃで作られたランタン（ジャック・オー・ランタン）は19人の子どもを歓迎しました。19人のうち1人は以前参加したことがありました。残りの子どもたちは初めて参加しました。色々な仮装を見ました。可愛い南瓜や怖い死神、綺麗な王女、かっこいい特別機動隊もいました。私はルイージに、理美はマリオに仮装しました。

A jack-o’-lantern made from an American pumpkin greeted 19 kids this year for Halloween.  We had one returning student this year and this was the first Halloween event for all the other students.  The costumes ranged from cute pumpkins to a scary death god to beautiful princesses to a cool swat team member. As for Rimi and myself, she was Mario and I was Luigi. 

去年のように、子どもによってエネルギーが違いました。何人かの生徒は最初から超ワクワクという感じで、学んだ怖い化け物の真似をしました。他の生徒はちょっと緊張して最初はあまり話しませんでした。しかしイベントの終わるころになると、大きな声で話して、部屋の中を動き回って、英語で質問していました。

Just like last year, the energy of each class was different.  Some students were super-excited from the start and acted like the scary monsters  we learned about right away and some were shy and scared so they didn’t speak or move a lot at first.  However, by the end of the event, they were speaking in loud voices and moving around and asking for things.

スライムを作ったのをきっかけに、恥ずかしがっていた生徒たちが変わりました。廊下に行って、玄関に貼ったスライマーというゴーストバスターズの幽霊を見てもらいました。そこにはスライムも付けていました。子どもたちは、よくある紙の工作より、グニュグニュしたスライムを作るほうが好きでした。多くの生徒たちがもう一つ作ろうといいました。けれども、ほかにすることがありすぎて、できませんでした。

The turning point for these students was making the slime.  We went out into the hall and saw Slimer from Ghostbusters that I had posted at the entrance with his signature slime mark. Rather than make a paper craft like we normally do, the kids loved getting their hands on the gooey, slimy creations.   Many asked to make another slime ball, but we were too busy.  

手を洗った後、ホワイトボードに書いたクモの巣にクモを付けました。付ける前、子どもたちは目隠しをしました。手探りでホワイトボードを探して歩いてる子供たちから笑顔がこぼれました。他の子どもたちは自分の番までちゃんと待っていて、ホワイトボードに向かっていた友達を応援しました。走る子どももいれば、手を出しながら注意深く歩く子どももいました。全員が楽しかったと言いました。

After washing our hands, we played pin the spider on the spiderweb.  There is something about being blindfolded and walking that put a smile on many of the students faces.  They patiently waited for their turns and cheered for their friends as theymade their way to the spiderweb drawn on the whiteboard.  Some dashed and some cautiously put their hands out while they slowly meandered their way to it, but they all said that they enjoyed it.

トリックオアトリートをする前、ルールを伝えました。そして『Who are you?』と聞かれた後、自分の仮装の説明の仕方を学びました。子どもたちがドアをノックして、大きな声で『Trick or Treat』と叫びましたが、その時、理美と僕は頭だけ違う仮装をして、子どもたちに答えました。理美は私の一番のお気に入りの幽霊の帽子をかぶっていました。自動で動く骸骨とかぼちゃのランタンもおいていました。去年の子どもたちはそれらを怖がっていたのに、残念ですが、今年は怖くなかったらしいです。誰も悲鳴を上げないで、おやつを集めました。けれども、私が子どもたちに近づくいた時、子どもたちはびっくりして固まっていましたお母さんたちはそれを見て、楽しそうに笑いました。

Before trick-or-treating, we went over the rules and they learned how to describe their costume.  Each time they banged on the door and shouted “trick or treat,” Rimi and I greeted them with a different head covering.  My favorite was Rimi’s ghost hat.  The kids excitedly showed their moms the treats that they had received.  Unfortunately, this year’s kids did not seem so scared by the skeleton and the Japanese jack-o’-latern moving by themselves as they collected candy.  At least no one shrieked, but the moms had a good laugh asthey saw that I moved them and the kids just looked confused.  

かぼちゃのランタンのケサディーヤは今年も大人気でした。サルサを食べたかった人が一番多かったですが、たくさんの親子がケサディーヤと南瓜スープを食べてくれました。クラスが終わるまでずっとスープを温めていたのですが、みんなはカレーだと思っていたみたいです。皆は楽しかったと言って、帰りたくないと言う生徒がたくさんいました。

The jack-o’-latnern quesadillas were a big hit again.  Almost everyonewanted to try the salsa, but many parents and children ate the quesadillas with the pumpkin soup. By the last classes, the soup had simmered down so much that many thought it was a curry.  Everyone had so much fun and many students said that they did not want to leave.

イベントが多い冬が近付いています。幸運なことに、コロナが減ってきています。緊急事態宣言も解けました。けれども、風邪や熱の出やすい季節に入りますから、体に気をつけてください。私たちは感謝祭のグッズも買い始めています。感謝祭は日本ではあまり知られていませんが、ハロウィンイベントを楽しんでくれた人が、感謝祭のイベントにも参加してくれて、私たちと一緒にごちそうを食べたり、くつろいでくれたりすることを願っています。

The holiday season is starting.  Luckily, the numbers of corona cases has shot down and the state of emergency has been lifted.  Hopefully, everyone will stay healthy as we head into cold and flu season.  Rimi and have already started buying the necessary items for Thanksgiving.  We hope that everyone who enjoyed the popular Halloween event will come and celebrate the not so well known in Japan event and join us for a leisurely banquet of food.
